The ousted Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa has forcefully reclaimed his position on Thursday, February 27, 2025.
Obasa, who was impeached on January 13 over allegations of gross misconduct and financial impropriety, arrived at the Assembly complex around 11:30 AM, accompanied by heavily armed police officers and civil defence personnel.
Upon arrival, Obasa declared, “I’ve resumed and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly.” He proceeded to preside over a plenary session with four other members, despite the chamber’s doors being forcibly opened by security personnel to facilitate their entry.

The session commenced at 3:00 PM and continued until approximately 3:30 PM. Notably, over 26 other members of the Assembly were present in the complex but abstained from entering the chamber, signaling their allegiance to the incumbent Speaker, Mojisola Meranda.
Obasa’s impeachment last month was executed by 32 out of the 40 Assembly members, citing misconduct and financial mismanagement, including allegations of spending ₦17 billion on a gate for the Assembly complex.
In response, Mojisola Meranda was elected as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Despite his removal, Obasa has consistently refuted the legitimacy of his impeachment, describing it as unconstitutional and asserting that due process was not followed. He contends that the removal was executed with a counterfeit mace, rendering it null and void.

The situation has escalated tensions within the Assembly, leading to confusion and a potential constitutional crisis.
The absence of a fresh leadership election to reinstate Obasa further complicates the matter.
As of now, the Assembly remains divided, with two factions supporting different leaders, and the legal and political implications of Obasa’s actions are yet to be fully determined.
