A heartbreaking incident shook the Tudun Tagarji community in the Kaura area of Kano State when a newborn baby was found dead in a carton abandoned near a drainage.
The tragic discovery was made in the early hours of Saturday, February 15, during a routine patrol by the Operation Zaman Lafiya vigilante group.
Commander of the vigilante group, Rabiu Sulaiman, disclosed the shocking finding in a statement on Sunday, February 16. According to Sulaiman, his team stumbled upon the disturbing scene at around 2 a.m. while conducting their regular security rounds.
“Yesterday, around 2 a.m., while we were on patrol, we came across a shocking incident inside a pit very close to us. Upon close observation, we noticed a disposed carton, but we had no idea what was inside it,” Sulaiman recounted.

“To clear our doubt and be sure nothing harmful was kept there, I instructed my boys to open the carton and behold, upon opening it, we saw a baby already dead.”
Following the grim discovery, the vigilante group promptly informed community leaders before reporting the case to the police.
“By morning, we invited the ward head to come and see for himself, along with other members of the community, before conveying the baby to the police station and informing them,” Sulaiman explained.
Police authorities directed the vigilantes to a hospital, where medical personnel confirmed that the baby was already dead.
“We came back home and organised burial rites for the baby in accordance with Islamic teachings,” Sulaiman added.

The commander called for increased vigilance within communities and urged parents to take greater responsibility in guiding their children, particularly young women, to prevent situations leading to unwanted pregnancies.
“Unwanted pregnancy contradicts Islamic teachings. Parents must monitor their children’s movements and guide them properly,” he emphasized.
The incident has left the Tudun Tagarji community in shock, with residents calling for stricter measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
Meanwhile, authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death and abandonment.
