The Kano State Police Command has issued a stern warning to residents against any form of street gatherings or protests as the state prepares for the upcoming Independence Day celebrations on October 1, 2024.

The command made it clear that it is ready to take decisive action against any individual or group that violates the order, citing concerns over potential unrest.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna, delivered the warning during a press briefing on Monday at the Command’s headquarters in Bompai, Kano, while parading several arrested suspects accused of various crimes.

Haruna emphasized that the police are determined to prevent a recurrence of the violent incidents that occurred during the recent #EndBadGovernance protests in the state.

“On the forthcoming Independence Day celebration on October 1, 2024, the Police Command has concluded all necessary arrangements to provide adequate security during and after the event period,” SP Haruna said.

“I, therefore, urge all Kano State residents to cooperate with the police and other security agencies and participate in the Independence Day celebration responsibly, adhering to all safety guidelines and respecting the rights of others.”

The spokesperson noted that security deployments have been made at strategic locations throughout Kano State to forestall any security threats, particularly in response to rumors of a planned nationwide protest on October 1. He added, “We have to appreciate the fact that all forms of crime are reducing drastically, and we will not allow any situation that could destabilize the state’s peace and security.”

Addressing the arrest of suspects, SP Haruna disclosed that no fewer than 89 individuals were apprehended for various offences, including kidnapping, human trafficking, armed robbery, drug dealing, and forgery. The arrests were made at different locations across the state between September 12 and the present date.

Of the 89 suspects, 53 have been charged to court, while 36 others are still under investigation, Haruna stated. He attributed the successful operations to the proactive approach adopted by the command under the directives of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, emphasizing the effectiveness of community-oriented and intelligence-led policing strategies.

“In line with the IGP’s directive, we have embarked on robust community engagements, intelligence-led operations, and round-the-clock visibility patrols in Kano State to respond rapidly to emergencies, distress calls, and prevent crimes,” Haruna noted.

He commended the efforts of the police force in combating crime and ensuring public safety, noting that the command has made significant strides in recent months.

As the state prepares to mark Nigeria’s Independence Day, the Kano State Police Command called on all residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and support the police’s efforts in maintaining law and order.

The command assured the public that it is fully committed to protecting lives and property during the celebration and beyond.
