Kano Govt Clarifies Unpaid One-Year Workers’ Salaries

The Kano State Government has addressed concerns raised by some civil servants regarding the nonpayment of their salaries since April last year.

Speaking on the matter, the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, clarified that the affected civil servants are those who failed to participate in the mandatory verification exercise conducted in April, 2024.

“The government cannot process payments for employees who did not comply with the verification exercise,” Ibrahim stated while briefing journalists during the presentation of the committee’s report on salary discrepancies.

He further revealed that some salaries were also withheld due to identity conflicts among civil servants. “Until these individuals provide valid justifications through their respective MDAs, their salaries will remain unpaid,” he warned.

To tackle the issue of salary discrepancies, the state government has introduced a payroll verification strategy. Ibrahim explained, “MDAs across the state will now receive their staff payrolls from the State’s Payroll Standing Committee every month for review.”

The Secretary to the State Government added that civil servants will also have access to their payroll details through their respective MDAs to ensure that their salaries are accurately reflected and to raise any concerns if necessary.

However, he cautioned that a delay in the payment of March salaries could occur if MDAs fail to adhere to the new policy. “These measures are designed to prevent a recurrence of the February salary discrepancies, where some civil servants reported unexplained salary cuts,” Ibrahim emphasized.

The state government’s actions, he noted, are aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability in the payroll system.
