Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf on Wednesday directed the Accountant-General of the state to close all Ministry, Department, and Agency accounts in the state with immediate effect.
Governor Yusuf gave the order during a meeting with the Chairman of the Kano State Internal Revenue Service and heads of MDAs at the Government House.
The governor said the order was to ensure that all government revenue is properly accounted for and utilised for the development of the state.
He lamented that Kano is generating about N1.6 billion monthly, less than the over N10 billion being generated by Kaduna State.
As a result, the governor said the state heavily relies on the federal allocation to discharge its statutory responsibilities of paying salaries as well as the provision infrastructures and other vital services.
“Sadly, 70 percent of the N1.6 billion being generated was from deductions made from civil servants salaries across the state also known as Pay As You Earn (PAYE).” Yusuf said.
He however attributed the low revenue generation to corruption and the failure of the state to modernize revenue generation, which he said has been responsible for a lot of leakages.
