The Rano Emirate in Kano State has declared a ban on the withdrawal of girls from school for marriage until they complete their primary education.

The directive was issued by the Emir of Rano, Ambassador Dr. Muhammad Isa Umaru, during the 2025/2026 primary school enrollment campaign held on Friday in Lausu town.

The event was organized in collaboration with the Kano State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), and UNICEF.

Speaking through the Emirate’s spokesperson, Nasiru Habu Faragai, Dr. Umaru instructed district and ward heads, Fulani leaders, and Islamic clerics across the Emirate to strictly enforce the ban, warning that defaulters would face sanctions.

The monarch condemned the widespread practice of withdrawing girls from school for early marriage, describing it as harmful to their future and a hindrance to societal development. He further cautioned parents and teachers against colluding to frustrate girls’ education.

“Educating children, especially girls, is not just the responsibility of parents but also the entire community. It is the foundation for progress and development in our state,” the Emir emphasized.

He urged parents and community leaders to support the government’s efforts in expanding access to education, stressing that investing in the education of girls would yield long-term benefits for families and the wider society.
