A teacher at Soun High School in Oyo State, Mr. Fatai Adegoke, has died after being brutally attacked by his students while trying to stop them from gambling during school hours.

Eyewitnesses told reporters that the incident occurred when Mr. Adegoke confronted a group of students caught gambling inside a classroom. The confrontation reportedly turned violent as the students descended on him, beating him mercilessly and inflicting multiple injuries, including broken limbs.

The teacher was rushed to a nearby hospital but sadly died from the injuries he sustained in the assault.

In a statement issued by a group of concerned educators, the late Mr. Adegoke was described as “a dedicated and disciplined professional whose life was cut short in the line of duty.”

“With deep pain and righteous indignation, we mourn the tragic and avoidable death of Mr. Fatai Adegoke, a teacher who was attacked by his own students while trying to stop them from gambling during school hours. This horrifying act is not just an assault on one man—it is an attack on the entire teaching profession,” the group stated.

They called on the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), and law enforcement agencies to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. The group also urged that the parents of the culprits be held accountable for failing to instill discipline in their children.

Describing the tragedy as a symptom of moral decline within schools and homes, the educators stressed the urgent need for improved safety measures, stronger moral education, and stricter disciplinary enforcement in Nigeria’s public schools.

Efforts to reach the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, for official confirmation were unsuccessful as of press time.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that the students involved have gone into hiding, sparking outrage across the community and renewed calls for better protection of teachers in the discharge of their duties.
