The Kano State Government has uncovered significant irregularities in the payroll system of local government councils, with no fewer than 247 staff members found to have either retired from service or passed away but continued to receive salaries.
According to a statement issued by Musa Muhammad, press secretary to the office of the secretary to the state government, the fraudulent payments amounted to ₦27,824,395.40 for the month of March 2025 alone Grassroots Parrot reports.
The discovery was made during a recent payroll validation exercise aimed at reforming salary administration within the state’s civil service.

“In a decisive move toward cleansing the state payroll, the Kano State Government has recorded a major milestone in its ongoing efforts to reform the salary administration system within the state civil service,” the statement read.
The government revealed that despite the deaths or retirements of the affected individuals, their names continued to appear on the payroll, with salaries still being disbursed.
However, the statement confirmed that the entire fraudulent sum has been recovered and returned to the local government treasury.
The Kano State Government emphasized that this recovery highlights its commitment to promoting good governance, transparency, and responsible management of public funds.

“The government remains resolute in its commitment to purging the payroll system of irregularities.”
“Individuals found to be involved in this fraudulent activity will be identified and held fully accountable in accordance with the law,” Muhammad said.
