Former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Lt. General Jeremiah Timbut Useni (Rtd.) has passed away at the age of 81. According to family sources, General Useni died on Thursday, January 23, 2025, after a protracted illness.

The news of his passing was confirmed in a statement by Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State, released through his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere.

Governor Mutfwang described the late General as a towering figure whose death is a tremendous loss to his immediate family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, Plateau State, and the entire nation.

“General Useni was an embodiment of exemplary leadership and steadfast commitment to service,” the governor said. “His contributions to Nigeria’s security and political landscape will remain indelible.”

Governor Mutfwang highlighted the late General’s relentless efforts to promote peace and security, particularly in Northern Nigeria and Plateau State, where his influence was deeply felt.

He further recounted Useni’s illustrious career, which spanned military, governmental, and political service.

General Useni served Nigeria with distinction in several high-profile roles. During his military career, he held positions such as Minister of Transport, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

His tenure as FCT Minister was marked by significant developments in Abuja’s infrastructure and administrative systems.

After retiring from the military, Useni ventured into politics, where he continued his dedication to public service.

He served as the Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and was later elected as the Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District in 2015 under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Governor Mutfwang praised Useni’s life of selflessness, compassion, and unwavering dedication to his community and the nation.

“General Useni’s legacy of kindness, generosity, and service will endure in the hearts of those he impacted,” Mutfwang said.

“On behalf of my family, the government, and the peace-loving people of Plateau State, I extend my deepest sympathies to the President, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the immediate family, and all those mourning the loss of this distinguished elder statesman.”

Useni’s death marks the end of an era for many Nigerians who witnessed his transformative contributions to both military and civil service. He is survived by his family, who are yet to announce burial arrangements.

The nation mourns the passing of a true patriot whose life’s work will continue to inspire generations to come.
