Former Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has suspended plans to establish an independent Hisbah group known as Hisbah Fisabilillahi in Kano State following widespread concerns and strong opposition from the state government.
Grassroots parrot reports Ganduje plans to recruit about 12,000 members into the proposed outfit, which he said was intended to complement security efforts across the state amid rising insecurity in some local government areas.
However, the Kano State Government rejected the move, warning that the establishment of an independent Hisbah group by an individual could pose a serious threat to peace and security.

The government stressed that the authority to create and regulate Hisbah operations lies solely with the state, not private individuals or groups.
The suspension of the plan was confirmed in a statement issued by the Director-General of the National Productivity Centre and APC chieftain in Kano State, Alhaji Baffa Babba Dan Agundi.
According to the statement, the decision followed a stakeholders’ meeting involving representatives from Kano’s 44 local government areas, held at the Tinubu Campaign Office in Kano.
The statement noted that the proposal was halted after intense public reactions and growing concerns over the possible implications of setting up an independent Hisbah organisation.

It added that critical stakeholders — including the Kano State Government, the Department of State Services (DSS), and Ganduje himself — intervened to prevent any step that could undermine peace and stability in the state.
The stakeholders also reaffirmed their respect for the legally constituted Kano State Hisbah Board and pledged continued support for recognised security agencies in maintaining law and order, as well as protecting lives and property in Kano State and across Nigeria.
The development appears to have eased tensions surrounding the controversial proposal, as authorities emphasize dialogue and lawful processes in addressing security challenges in the state.
