Eguavoen Sets Conditions As Permanent Super Eagles Coach

Super Eagles interim coach Augustine Eguavoen has outlined the conditions that must be met for him to consider taking on the permanent coaching role, emphasizing the immense pressure that comes with managing Nigeria’s national team.

The 58-year-old took charge of the Super Eagles last month during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda, and he is set to lead the team again in the upcoming double-header against Libya.

Eguavoen, a former defender who is managing the three-time African champions for the fourth time, acknowledged that the Super Eagles job is a daunting task that requires careful deliberation.

“My priority is giving back to football, especially to the young ones coming up. We played through the youth ranks, and in my role as technical director, my colleagues and I work to help young players climb that ladder to the top. I love that job,” Eguavoen said in an interview with Brila FM.

He expressed his love for his current role as technical director but remained cautious about accepting the Super Eagles position permanently. “The Super Eagles job I’m doing right now, if I were to switch permanently, it’s something I’d need to sit down, reflect, and think deeply about because it’s not a small job.”

On the possibility of becoming the team’s permanent head coach, Eguavoen laid out his requirements, emphasizing the need for stability and support. “It will be a tough one. You have to give me a long-term contract with patience and clauses in that contract because winning is not guaranteed every week or day,” he stated. “You will have to give me time to tweak the team till I find what I want.”

Eguavoen concluded by saying that he would consider the position under the right circumstances. “If they’re going to give me a long-term contract with guaranteed patience, why not? Otherwise, I don’t know.”

The Super Eagles are preparing for a crucial phase in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, and the uncertainty surrounding the head coach position has added an additional layer of intrigue as fans and stakeholders wait to see if Eguavoen will be offered the role on a full-time basis.
