The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested former Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku, over allegations of misappropriating N27 billion during his tenure.

Sources within the anti-graft agency confirmed that Ishaku, who served as governor from May 2015 to May 2023, was apprehended on Friday and remains in the agency’s custody as of Friday evening.

An EFCC insider disclosed that the agency has filed at least 15 charges against the former governor and is set to arraign him in court soon. According to the source, the EFCC has gathered substantial evidence against Ishaku, paving the way for his prosecution.

Ishaku, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is accused of being involved in large-scale corruption and financial mismanagement while in office. This development comes two years after three officials from his administration were arrested in connection to a N21 billion fraud case.

In May 2021, the EFCC apprehended a permanent secretary, a director of finance and accounts, and a cashier in the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs for allegedly diverting public funds during Ishaku’s administration.

Sources revealed that the funds were withdrawn from state accounts through multiple cheques, each amounting to at least N10 million.

Further updates are anticipated as EFCC continues its investigation and prepares to present its findings in court.
