Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) has achieved a milestone by conducting its first kidney and urology treatments using Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation (LASER) technology.
According to Daily Trust, This breakthrough was made possible through the support of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), which allocated N4.5 billion for equipment procurement for AKTH and six other hospitals in the northwest region.

This initiative brought together medical professionals from various hospitals who underwent rigorous training to effectively utilize the advanced technology-driven machines.
Dr. Przemyslaw Zugaj, the Lead Surgeon and a urology specialist from Poland, highlighted the versatility of the new equipment in treating complex cases such as kidney, bladder, and prostate ailments, among others.

He emphasized the advantages of LASER treatments, which enable patients to recover faster and return home within two to three days, even in cases of complications, unlike traditional invasive procedures that require longer hospital stays.
Prof. Sani Aji from Bayero University, Kano, underscored the transformative impact of LASER surgery, noting that it minimizes the need for extensive incisions and reduces hospitalization duration.
Similarly, Professor Samuel Osaghae from the University of Benin commended TETFund for its strategic investment, affirming that the installation of advanced equipment will enhance urological services and contribute to improved healthcare delivery nationwide.

Dr. Haruna Usman from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, highlighted the financial benefits and convenience for patients, as LASER surgery diminishes reliance on costly foreign treatments and eliminates the necessity for medical tourism abroad.
The utilization of LASER technology at AKTH signifies a significant advancement in medical care, offering patients access to innovative treatments and paving the way for enhanced healthcare services in Nigeria.
