Atiku Abubakar Vows to Continue Seeking Presidency

Former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has again declared his intention to persistently vie for the nation’s top office as long as he remains alive and healthy.

Atiku, a prominent figure within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), revealed his resolve during an interview on the Hausa service of the Voice of America, citing the persistence of former US President Abraham Lincoln, who contested seven times before his eventual triumph.

The 77-year-old statesman, who has made six attempts at the presidency since 1993, emphasized his commitment to the electoral process, despite facing setbacks in previous elections.

Atiku’s announcement arrives amidst speculation surrounding a potential merger or alliance with Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, and other opposition leaders, aimed at unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 polls.

Former Director-General of the LP Presidential Campaign Council, Akin Osuntokun, clarified that any collaboration with Obi would hinge upon him being offered the presidential ticket.

In a recent interview with the BBC, Atiku asserted that his candidacy for 2027 would be subject to the decision of the people and his party, asserting that it was premature to confirm his participation in the next electoral cycle.

Addressing recent interactions with Peter Obi, Atiku emphasized solidarity and unity, reaffirming their commitment to support any chosen candidate.

He further extended openness to a potential merger with parties in favor of a presidential candidate from the southeast, emphasizing qualifications as the primary criterion.

While acknowledging the present challenges within the PDP, Atiku stressed the necessity of unity and collaboration with other parties to secure victory in the upcoming election.

Dr. Tanko Yunusa, spokesman of the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign in the previous election, expressed that Atiku’s declaration would not impede the planned coalition by opposition parties, emphasizing that coalition leaders would determine leadership collectively.

However, Yunusa hinted at Atiku’s potential support for Peter Obi in the forthcoming elections, indicating alignment with the aspirations of the opposition coalition.

Atiku’s unwavering determination and strategic maneuvering underscore the dynamic nature of Nigerian politics as the nation approaches another pivotal election cycle, with alliances and coalitions shaping the landscape of political discourse and competition.
