The Presidency has confirmed the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun as the Inspector-General of Police, stating that he stepped down to address family matters requiring his full attention.
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed on Tuesday that the former police chief submitted his resignation letter the same day, citing personal family issues.
However, multiple Presidency sources indicated that Egbetokun’s resignation followed a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Monday evening, where he was reportedly asked to step aside.

His official vehicle, bearing the number plate NPF-01, was seen at the Villa’s forecourt around 6:40 p.m. on Monday.
Appointed on June 19, 2023, Egbetokun faced increasing criticism during his tenure over worsening insecurity across the country, including rising cases of kidnapping, banditry, and terrorist attacks in several states.
