Kwankwaso Declares January 23 ‘Betrayal Day’ As Gov. Yusuf Dumps NNPP

The presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 general election, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has declared January 23 as a “Day of Betrayal” following the defection of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, from the party.

Kwankwaso made the declaration while addressing thousands of his supporters in Kano on Friday, shortly after the governor officially resigned from the NNPP ahead of his imminent defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Grassroots Parrot reports that the governor’s exit from the NNPP has sent shockwaves across the state’s political landscape, given the party’s dominance in Kano during the 2023 elections.

Addressing the crowd, Kwankwaso said the date should be permanently recorded in history to highlight the consequences of betrayal and broken trust in politics.

“Today, as the leader of this Movement, I declare the 23rd of January as Betrayal Day,” Kwankwaso said.
“We believe that day should be permanently recorded in history to ensure global awareness of betrayal and the breaking of trust.”

The former Kano State governor revealed that he had personally appealed to Governor Yusuf to remain in the NNPP, stressing that the mandate secured through years of struggle should not be surrendered to political rivals.

According to him, the decision to defect amounts to a betrayal of the trust reposed in the governor by the people who voted overwhelmingly for the NNPP in the last election.

Kwankwaso, however, urged his supporters to remain calm and steadfast, assuring them that the NNPP remains strong and committed to protecting the political interests of the people of Kano State.
