Popular Oyo State broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat has explained the reasons behind his decision to contest the 2027 governorship election, saying it followed what he described as a divine approval after deep reflection and consultations.
Speaking on his programme on Agidigbo FM on Monday, Hamzat said he carefully considered advice from supporters and critics alike before committing the decision to God, whom he said ultimately approved his ambition. He announced he will run under the Accord Party.
The broadcaster, known for his signature phrase “e gbenu si mic” (“speak to the microphone”), thanked advisers who cautioned him against contesting, noting that their concerns came from love. However, he said he was personally convinced he could serve the people sincerely.
Hamzat appealed for forgiveness from anyone offended by his decision and urged residents to rally behind him, stressing that his ambition is driven by a desire to serve, not personal gain.

“I want to serve the people and not be like most corrupt politicians,” he said, adding that his confidence rests on popular support rather than financial power or political connections.
He also dismissed fears of electoral defeat or manipulation, saying he had moved past such concerns and was focused on the task ahead.
The broadcaster formally declared his ambition on Saturday at a rally held at Liberty Stadium, Ibadan, where he described his entry into politics as a calling, noting that he had never planned to seek elective office before now.
“I don’t have money, political influence, or government backing,” Hamzat told supporters. “I came with God, and that is all I need.”
