The Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, joined his ancestors on Sunday at the age of 91.

The revered monarch’s passing came just hours after the death of his longtime friend and former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, was announced.

Oba Adetona ascended the throne of his forefathers on April 2, 1960, and reigned for over 64 years—making him one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in Nigerian history. His tenure witnessed the transformation of Ijebuland into a hub of culture, commerce, and education.

A source close to the royal family confirmed that the monarch died peacefully on Sunday after a brief illness. Official confirmation and funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the Ogun State Government and the Ijebu Traditional Council.

Known for his wisdom, outspokenness, and modern approach to traditional leadership, Oba Adetona was deeply respected across political and cultural divides.

His reign spanned Nigeria’s transition from colonial rule to independence and through multiple republics, military regimes, and democratic administrations.

Born on May 10, 1934, the late monarch was not only a custodian of Ijebu customs and traditions but also a nation-builder who contributed significantly to national discourse and development.

More details are expected in the coming days as the kingdom begins official mourning rites for the departed monarch.
