The Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano (BUK) has officially approved the appointment of Professor Haruna Musa, fsi, as the 12th Vice-Chancellor of the institution.
His appointment takes effect from August 18, 2025, for a single, non-renewable term of five years, according to a statement signed by spokesperson of the University, Garba Lamara and made available to Grassroots Parrot on Thursday night.
The announcement was made in a letter signed by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, His Excellency, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, following the Council’s meeting held on Thursday, July 3, 2025.
“The Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano, exercising its authority under Section 4 of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Amendment Act, 2003, at its meeting held on Thursday, 3rd July 2025, considered the recommendations of the Selection Board and hereby approves your appointment as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, for a single tenure of five (5) years with effect from 18th August, 2025,” the letter stated.
Dr. Gawuna congratulated Professor Musa on the appointment and wished him a successful and impactful tenure.
Born in Dambatta, Kano State, on June 20, 1967, Professor Musa has had a distinguished academic and administrative career. A BUK alumnus, he earned his B.Sc. in Chemistry in 1991, followed by an M.Sc. in Polymer Chemistry (1999), and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom, in 2009.
Professor Musa began his academic career at BUK in 1993 as a Graduate Assistant in the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry. He rose through the ranks and was promoted to Professor in 2019.
He has authored 52 scholarly articles, 8 book chapters, and presented over 40 conference papers globally.
He is widely recognized for his research in polymer chemistry and sustainability, notably leading a ₦36 million National Research Fund project on zinc-air batteries and serving as the Nigerian lead in an international collaboration with North Carolina State University on plastic recycling technology.U
Until his appointment, Professor Musa served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) at BUK and chaired key university committees, including the Senate Business Committee and University Admissions Committee.
