Rivers Crisis Ends as Wike, Fubara Agree To Work Together

…“Everything is over,” Wike says as Fubara calls truce a divine intervention

After nearly a year of intense political rivalry that destabilized governance in Rivers State, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, on Thursday night confirmed that peace has finally returned between him and Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Speaking to journalists after a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Wike said both factions had reached a final agreement during a peace session brokered by President Bola Tinubu.

“We have all agreed to work together with the governor, and the governor also agreed to work together with all of us. We are members of the same political family,” Wike said.

He acknowledged that the rift had dragged on for several months but affirmed that the matter had now been conclusively resolved.

“Just like humans, you have a disagreement, and then you also have a time to settle your disagreement,” he said. “That has been finally concluded today, and we have come to report to Mr. President. So for me, everything is over.”

Wike also called on their political followers to embrace peace and put the hostilities behind them.

“I enjoin everybody who believes to work with us, to also work together with everybody. There’s no more acrimony. There’s nothing to say,” he added.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who was also present at the Villa, echoed similar sentiments, describing the resolution as a “divine intervention” and a “turning point” for Rivers State.

“For me, it’s a day we have to thank Almighty God. It’s very important that this day has come to be,” Fubara said.

He stressed the importance of peace for the development of the state and pledged full commitment to maintaining the unity achieved.

“What we need for the progress of Rivers State is peace, and by the special grace of God, with the help of Mr. President and the agreement of the leaders of the state, peace has returned to Rivers State,” Fubara declared.

“We’ll do everything within our power to make sure that we sustain it this time around.”

The political crisis between Wike and Fubara, once allies, began shortly after Fubara took office in May 2023. Tensions reached boiling point in October when pro-Wike lawmakers in the State Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against the governor.

In response, Fubara ordered the demolition of the Assembly complex following a suspicious fire outbreak and moved legislative sessions to a temporary location.

Despite a peace deal in December 2023—also facilitated by President Tinubu—the truce broke down, leading to escalating tension and administrative paralysis in the state.

In March 2025, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers, citing security concerns and governance collapse. The move suspended Fubara’s executive powers and installed former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (retd.), as a sole administrator.

Thursday night’s resolution now appears to mark the end of the prolonged political crisis, with both camps pledging to work together for the state’s development.
