The Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to press freedom and the professional empowerment of journalists operating across the state.

This assurance was delivered through the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Malam Ibrahim Garba Waiya, during the official inauguration of the newly elected executive members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Correspondents’ Chapel, Kano State chapter.

According to a press release issued by the chapel’s secretary, Salim Umar Ibrahim, the commissioner commended the media’s critical role in fostering accountability, transparency, and democratic values in Kano and beyond.

“Very soon, the ministry will unveil historic and transformative initiatives that will positively impact working journalists and uplift the practice of journalism in Kano State,” Waiya announced.

He congratulated the new executives, led by Comrade Murtala Adewale of The Guardian, on their emergence through what he described as a peaceful and democratic process, noting it as a strong vote of confidence by their peers.

Waiya also praised the outgoing leadership of the chapel for its meritorious service, laying what he called a solid foundation for professionalism and growth in the media sector.

“As representatives of respected media houses, you are the lens through which the world views Kano. Journalism is a noble profession—one that thrives on truth, public interest, and national progress,” Waiya said, urging reporters to uphold the ethics of accuracy, fairness, and objectivity in an era dominated by misinformation and digital falsehoods.

The commissioner highlighted the strong and historic collaboration between the ministry and the Correspondents’ Chapel and expressed optimism that the new leadership will build upon this legacy.

He also extended appreciation to the national NUJ for recently recognizing Governor Yusuf as the “Media Friendly Governor of the Year 2025” at the union’s 70th anniversary gala in Abuja.

“The honor is a reflection of the governor’s principled stance on media independence, transparency, and support for journalism,” Waiya added.

“We will prioritize members’ welfare and pursue capacity-building opportunities through collaborations with institutions such as NITDA, the MacArthur Foundation, and the Daily Trust Foundation,” he said.

Adewale also unveiled plans to modernize the chapel’s secretariat with facilities including internet access, a fully equipped newsroom, and sustainable revenue-generation initiatives like annual media summits and journalism awards—all while safeguarding editorial independence.
