An Osun State Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Ila-Orangun has sentenced a 25-year-old man, Raji Ridwan, to three years in prison with hard labour for attempted rape.

The conviction was handed down on Friday, June 20, following Ridwan’s arrest by operatives of the Osun Amotekun Corps after he attempted to assault a female student sexually at the Federal University of Science, Ila-Orangun.

According to court proceedings, Ridwan unlawfully gained access to a female hostel on campus at night and attempted to assault one of the students.

The victim, however, resisted his advances and raised the alarm, drawing the attention of other students and neighbours. The commotion forced Ridwan to flee the scene.

He was later apprehended during a coordinated manhunt by the Amotekun Corps and reportedly confessed to the crime during interrogation.

He was subsequently arraigned before Magistrate Ibukun Adeniran on a single count of attempted rape and pleaded guilty.

The prosecution presented Ridwan’s confessional statement through the investigating officer, along with the testimony of an eyewitness.

In her ruling, Magistrate Adeniran held that the act violated Section 359 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume 2, Laws of Osun State, 2002, and sentenced him to three years’ imprisonment with hard labour, without the option of a fine.

Reacting to the verdict, the Osun Amotekun Corps commended the victim’s courage and the swift response of students and residents, which led to Ridwan’s arrest.

The corps reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and combating sexual and gender-based violence across the state.
