The Upper Shariah Court in Kano is expected to deliver its verdict today, Monday, in the highly anticipated trial of Shafiu Abubakar Gadan, who is facing charges of culpable homicide and causing grievous harm after allegedly setting fire to a mosque during early morning prayers in the Gezawa Local Government Area.
The tragic incident, which occurred on May 16, 2024, initially claimed 17 lives, with the death toll rising to 25 in the following days as more victims succumbed to severe burn injuries sustained during the blaze.
The attack targeted worshippers who gathered for early morning (Subhi) prayers at a local mosque, leaving dozens injured and the community in fear.

Gadan, the prime suspect, earlier pleaded guilty to the charges and was subsequently remanded in a correctional facility by the presiding judge, Khadi Dalhatu Huza’i Zakariya, pending the court’s final judgment.
The prosecution is being led by the Kano State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Isah Dederi.
Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf strongly condemned the attack during a visit to Murtala Specialist Hospital, where survivors are receiving treatment, and vowed to deliver justice.
He extended condolences to the bereaved families and assured them that the government would ensure the perpetrator is held accountable.

“This act of violence is deeply disturbing and unacceptable,” Governor Yusuf said. “We will ensure justice is served swiftly and fairly. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the victims and their families.”
The governor also clarified that the incident was the result of a longstanding family dispute, effectively ruling out any connections to terrorism or political motivations.
