Wike, PDP Governors Strike Peace Deal Ahead Of 2027 Elections

In a move to stabilizing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 presidential elections, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has struck a deal with governors elected under the party’s platform to resolve longstanding internal crises.

Grassroots Parrot gathered that the breakthrough came during a private meeting in Lagos last week between Wike and Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, who represented the PDP Governors Forum.

The talks centered on ending the political crisis in Rivers State involving Wike and the suspended state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, as well as addressing other internal party disputes, including leadership positions in the South-South and the unresolved office of the National Secretary.

Sources close to the meeting revealed that Wike criticized previous recommendations made by the PDP Governors Forum, alleging they were in violation of party laws and had further inflamed divisions. He expressed dissatisfaction with how the Forum handled key decisions, particularly on the South-South zonal leadership and Rivers State crisis.

“Wike promised to remain in the PDP but insisted that for peace to return, the Forum and other party organs must review and correct some of their decisions,” the source told PUNCH.

“He emphasized the need to accommodate all interests to ensure unity and proper repositioning of the PDP ahead of the general elections.”

Governor Makinde, on his part, reportedly expressed frustration over the conduct of some PDP officials, which he said had worsened the party’s internal issues. He assured Wike of support from fellow governors and pledged to communicate the outcome of the meeting to them before the next PDP Governors Forum meeting.

Both leaders agreed that legal disputes involving party members should be dropped in favor of political solutions and internal reconciliation mechanisms.

A senior member of the PDP National Working Committee, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the meeting and expressed optimism that the resolutions reached would help mend the party’s internal rifts.

“Yes, Wike and Makinde met to resolve some issues, and their resolutions will go a long way in unifying and repositioning the PDP,” the official said.

The PDP has been grappling with serious internal divisions since after the 2023 general elections. Tensions reached new peak following the face-off between Wike and Governor Fubara in Rivers State and persistent disagreements over party leadership positions.

Efforts by the National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, and other organs to broker peace have largely failed, with the crisis prompting several defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The recent defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa, and other key PDP figures to the APC has further dented the party’s image and electoral prospects.
