The Emir of Kano and Khalifah of Tijaniyya, His Highness Khalifah Muhammadu Sanusi II, has responded to the recent ban on the Sallah Durbar, affirming that the decision was made in the best interest of enduring peace and development in the state.

Grassroots Parrot reports that Emir Sanusi said while the annual celebration, traditionally held at the end of Ramadan, is a significant cultural heritage dating back to the 15th century, it is not a matter of life and death.

Speaking during an Iftar dinner at the palace on Saturday, where he hosted eminent Islamic scholars and distinguished personalities, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) acknowledged the importance of maintaining peace.

“Peace is the foundation of progress and development in any society,” the Emir stated. “We have, therefore, accepted to withdraw all planned activities of the emirate related to the colorful Durbar, which has been inscribed by UNESCO as an intangible heritage of humanity.”

The Commissioner of Police in Kano, CP Adamu Bakori, had earlier announced the ban on the proposed Sallah Durbar under a joint security arrangement, citing intelligence reports that indicated potential security threats.

Reiterating his stance, Emir Sanusi remarked, “I do not see the Eid El-Fitr Durbar as a matter of life and death. The safety and well-being of Kano citizens remain my utmost priority.”

He urged residents to remain peaceful and law-abiding while cooperating with security agencies to ensure the safety and stability of Kano during and after the Sallah festivities.

Representing Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Ibrahim Umar Faruq, commended the Emir for his spirit of kindness and concern for public welfare.

He recalled how, during his time as a lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in the early 1980s, Emir Sanusi had exhibited generosity and guidance towards his students.

Additionally, the Murshid (Chief Imam) of the National Mosque, Professor Shehu Galadanci, praised Emir Sanusi for his wisdom and leadership. Professor Galadanci, a former National Security Adviser, aligned with the Emir’s sentiments.

He stressed that the safety of Kano’s people takes precedence over the Eid El-Fitr Durbar celebration. He lauded the Emir for his commitment to fostering peaceful coexistence in the state.
