Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has denounced her recent six-month suspension from the Nigerian Senate as unjust and a violation of natural justice, fairness, and equity.

The suspension, effective March 6, 2025, was recommended by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions following allegations of “gross misconduct” and violations of Senate rules.

The controversy began on February 20, 2025, when a dispute over seating arrangements in the Senate chamber led to a heated exchange between Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Subsequently, Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, alleging that his antagonism toward her stemmed from her refusal to yield to his advances.

Akpabio has categorically denied these allegations, stating, “At no time did I ever harass any woman. I was raised very well by my late single mother, and I have always upheld respect for women.”

The Senate’s ethics committee dismissed Akpoti-Uduaghan’s sexual harassment petition on procedural grounds, leading to her suspension.

As part of the disciplinary measures, her salary and security details have been withdrawn, and she is barred from accessing the National Assembly premises for the duration of the suspension.

In response to her suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan took to social media, asserting that the action does not diminish her legitimacy as a senator. She stated

“Against the culture of silence, intimidation, and victim-shaming, my unjust suspension from the Nigerian Senate invalidates the principles of natural justice, fairness, and equity.”

She further emphasized her commitment to serving her constituents, declaring, “I will continue to use my duly elected position to serve my constituents and country to the best of my ability till 2027… and beyond.”

Akpoti-Uduaghan has filed a lawsuit against Senate President Akpabio, seeking N100 billion in damages. She remains resolute in her stance, challenging the actions taken against her and reaffirming her dedication to her legislative duties and constituents.
