TINUBU SIGNS
President Bola Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has approved a ban on homosexuality, lesbianism, bestiality, and cross-dressing among personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

These activities have been classified as violations of the ethics and standards expected within the military.

The directive was outlined in Section 26 of the revised Harmonised Armed Forces Terms and Conditions of Service (HAF-TACOS), which Tinubu signed into law on December 16, 2024.

According to the document, military officers are explicitly prohibited from engaging in acts or affiliating with groups related to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, Two-Spirit (LGBTQIA2S+) community. The document also bans cross-dressing, body piercing, and tattooing.

It further warns officers against disorderly conduct, drunkenness on or off duty, and actions that could bring public disgrace. “An officer must not engage in homosexuality, lesbianism, and bestiality.

He/she is not to belong to, or engage in activities of the LGBTQIA2S+ group and cross-dressing, amongst others,” the document reads.

Officers are also forbidden from engaging in romantic or amorous relationships with subordinates or their spouses, as part of efforts to maintain discipline and professionalism in the ranks.

Additionally, the guidelines caution personnel against actions such as brawls or other forms of public disorderly behavior.

However, the document does not specify the disciplinary measures or penalties for personnel found violating these regulations, leaving questions about enforcement and consequences.

This directive is expected to reinforce the military’s focus on discipline, ethics, and order, aligning with broader conservative cultural norms in Nigeria.

It reflects the government’s stance against activities deemed contrary to traditional values within the country.

Further details on the implementation and monitoring of these new regulations are anticipated in the coming weeks.
