The Borno State Urban Planning and Development Board (BSUPDB) has announced a sweeping ban on street hawking and other unauthorized activities in the Maiduguri metropolis.

This decision, disclosed in a statement by the General Manager of the board, Mr. Limán Mustapha, on Friday, January 3, aims to restore order and maintain urban aesthetics.

According to the statement, the prohibition extends to tricycle operators and generator mechanics operating around Maiduguri’s Post Office and Monday Market areas.

The board also restricted activities on pedestrian walkways, junctions, and roundabouts. Additionally, it outlawed the sale of engine oil on road reservations, the dumping of sand or building materials, mixing of cement on roads, and the construction of boreholes by roadsides.

Mr. Mustapha emphasized that the ban aligns with the Borno State Urban Planning and Development Law of 2002.

He directed individuals and businesses affected by the order to vacate the areas immediately. “The board has no alternative but to arrest and prosecute defaulters in a court of law,” he warned.

The move is part of broader efforts to ensure a clean, safe, and organized urban environment in Maiduguri and across Borno State. The BSUPDB called on residents and business owners to comply with the directive to avoid legal consequences.

The initiative is expected to address longstanding urban planning challenges in Maiduguri, including congestion and environmental degradation.

As the state capital continues to grow, authorities are focusing on sustainable measures to enhance the city’s livability and infrastructure.
