NNPCL Invites Obasanjo For Port Harcourt Refinery Tour Amid Controversy

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has extended an open invitation to former President Olusegun Obasanjo for a tour of the Port Harcourt Refinery.

This follows Obasanjo’s recent interview with Channels Television, where he expressed skepticism about the refinery’s functionality, citing concerns raised by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC).

In the interview, Obasanjo revealed that during his presidency, SPDC was approached to acquire equity in the refinery. However, the oil giant reportedly declined, citing corruption as a significant obstacle to its effective operation. Obasanjo further accused NNPCL of misleading Nigerians about the refinery’s operational status.

In response, NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Mr. Olufemi Soneye, countered the claims, emphasizing the company’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

“Furthermore, we extend an open invitation to President Obasanjo for a tour of the rehabilitated refineries to witness firsthand the progress made under the new NNPC Limited,” Soneye stated.

Highlighting NNPCL’s transformation, Soneye explained that the company had undertaken a comprehensive overhaul of the Port Harcourt Refinery, moving beyond traditional Turnaround Maintenance (TAM) to ensure the facility meets global standards. He noted similar rehabilitation projects underway at the Kaduna and Warri refineries.

“This transformation represents a significant departure from the past,” Soneye said. “NNPC Limited is now a profit-driven international energy company, no longer a loss-making government corporation.

We remain committed to maintaining these refineries to world-class standards, ensuring their sustainable operation for Nigeria’s energy security.”

Addressing Obasanjo’s criticisms, Soneye remarked, “We deeply respect and hold President Obasanjo in the highest regard as a distinguished statesman.

His wisdom and experience are invaluable, and we assure him that his advice will always be welcomed and appreciated.”

Soneye extended an olive branch, inviting Obasanjo to join NNPCL’s efforts to guarantee energy security and deliver tangible benefits to Nigerians. “Together, we can continue to build a brighter future for our great nation,” he added.

Soneye also dismissed media speculation regarding NNPCL’s purported decision to cease crude oil supply to the Dangote Refinery as “falsehood,” refraining from further comment.
