NThe National Orientation Agency (NOA) has announced the launch of a nationwide birth registration social mobilization drive to register children aged 0-5 years, ensuring access to vital services such as education, healthcare, and social protection.
The NOA initiative, in partnership with the National Population Commission (NPC) and UNICEF, aims to provide each registered child with a National Identification Number (NIN) free of charge.
NOA Director-General Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu, represented by Director of Special Duties and States Operations David Akoji, emphasized the initiative’s goal of guaranteeing every child’s right to legal identity.

“Birth registration is a fundamental right of every child,” he stated. “It is the first legal acknowledgement of a child’s existence, safeguarding their rights and unlocking access to basic services crucial for their development.”
This initiative, which began in August and will run until November 2024, aims to address gaps in national data for education, healthcare, and public services.
Accurate birth registration, Akoji noted, is essential for national planning and development, providing the data needed to enhance these sectors. “By registering a child’s birth, families ensure recognition by the state, protecting children from abuse, exploitation, and statelessness,” he added.

The NOA encourages parents and guardians to visit the nearest NPC registration center with supporting documents, such as an immunization card or an existing birth certificate.
“The process is simple, free, and crucial for every child’s future,” said Akoji. Every registered child aged 0-5 years will receive a NIN upon face capture and birth registration.
The NOA urges all parents, guardians, and community leaders to participate in the registration drive, emphasizing, “Let’s work together to give every child in Nigeria the best start in life.”
