The Kano State Police Command has announced a restriction of movement in four local government areas ahead of Saturday’s by-elections in a bid to ensure a peaceful and secure voting process.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna, said the affected areas are Bagwai, Shanono, Ghari, and Tsanyawa.
The restriction will be in effect from 12 midnight on Friday, August 15, until 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 16, 2025.
“Movement of motor vehicles, tricycles, and motorcycles is strictly restricted during this period,” Haruna stated. “Exceptions will only be granted to vehicles on essential services, such as ambulances, fire service trucks, and those belonging to electoral officers and accredited observers.”

The measure comes as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducts a re-run election for the Ghari/Tsanyawa State Constituency and a by-election for the Bagwai/Shanono State Constituency.
According to Haruna, the command, under the leadership of CP Ibrahim Bakori, is working in collaboration with other security agencies to ensure the elections are free, fair, transparent, and hitch-free.
The police also outlined additional election-day guidelines, including: only eligible voters will be allowed at polling units, only INEC-accredited agents are permitted at polling units, and carrying weapons of any kind is strictly prohibited.

Also, wearing or displaying political party logos and identities at polling units is banned, loitering in or around polling stations will not be tolerated, and state security outfits such as vigilante groups and KAROTA personnel will not be allowed at polling units.
The command urged residents and visitors in the affected LGAs to cooperate fully with law enforcement for a peaceful process.
“We are committed to providing adequate security and maintaining peace throughout the electoral process,” Haruna assured.
