The traditional ruler of Ndufu-Alike community, Ezeogo Francis Igwe, father of former Ebonyi State Deputy Governor Kelechi Igwe, has been killed by his abductors.

Igwe was kidnapped on Sunday, March 1, 2026, while heading to church in his community. Armed men on motorcycles intercepted his vehicle, forced him out, and took him to an unknown location.

According to Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, Joshua Ukandu, the monarch was killed a day after his abduction. Police immediately launched intensive operations to rescue him.

Two suspects arrested in connection with the kidnapping confessed to the killing and led operatives to the gang’s hideout.

A gunbattle ensued when other gang members opened fire on police, leaving one criminal neutralized while others escaped. Seven additional suspects were later arrested, and a locally made pistol recovered.

The remains of Eze Igwe were recovered and deposited in a mortuary for autopsy. Suspects are in custody, with efforts ongoing to apprehend fleeing gang members.

The killing has plunged the Ndufu-Alike community into mourning, as residents come to terms with the loss of their monarch.
