The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission KANSIEC confirmed on Wednesday that the local government elections in the state would be held on November 30th, 2024.

Grassroots Parrot reports that the move came following the Supreme Court judgment, which granted the local government autonomy and mandated states to have substantive local government chairmen.

The chairman of the commission, Professor Sani Malunfashi, made the confirmation at a news conference in Kano.

“By this notice, the release of guidelines and notification of polls starts from Thursday, August 15th, to Saturday, August 31st, 2024, and campaigns by political parties commence from Friday, September 6th, to midnight on November 29th, 2024.

“Parties primaries and submission of names of candidates to the commission will be from September 19th, 2024, to Monday, September 30th, 2024, as sales of forms start from October 1st, 2024, to Wednesday, October 16th, 2024,” he said.

According to him, submission of all completed forms must be on or before Friday, October 18, 2024, as verification of candidates by the commission and submission of names of party agents by political parties will take effect from Friday, October 18, 2024, to Friday, October 25, 2024.

He added that the names of qualified and non-qualified candidates will be released on Friday, October 25, 2024, while replacements, changes of candidates, or any other changes will start from Friday, October 25, 2024, to Friday.

“On November 1, 2024, the publication of the names of eligible candidates by the commission will be on November 28, 2024, and Election Day will be on November 30, 2024.”

Malumfashi also announced that from December 30th to December 1st, 2024, the commission will declare election results, while runoff elections, if any, will be conducted on Saturday, December 14th, 2024.

Malunfashi, however, hinted that all candidates for the elections would be subjected to drug tests before they were cleared for the election.

The KANSIEC boss also threatened to expose any candidate who attempts to bribe him with any form of inducement to influence the results of the elections.

He assured that the election would be free, fair, and credible.

 

The last local government elections in the state were held on January 16, 2021, in 44 local government areas and 484 wards.
