In response to the recent cholera outbreak in Lagos and several other states, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has called for urgent and comprehensive measures to protect school children.
The organization emphasized the necessity of concerted efforts to prevent disruptions in the academic calendar due to the spread of the disease.
Celine Lafoucrier, the Chief of UNICEF’s Lagos Field Office, issued a statement on Monday highlighting the severe impact of cholera outbreaks on children and young adults.

She pointed out that these vulnerable groups face significant health risks, particularly those attending school, where the threat of severe dehydration and high mortality rates is particularly pronounced.
“There is, therefore, an urgent need for good sanitation, hygiene practices, improved access to clean water, and regular handwashing with soap and clean water in order to combat the outbreak in schools,” Lafoucrier stated.
She stressed that these measures are critical to curbing the spread of cholera and protecting the health of schoolchildren.

Lafoucrier also called for heightened awareness and education across the country to inform the public about cholera outbreaks and preventive measures.

In her statement, Lafoucrier underscored the importance of collaborative efforts to address the issue, urging both government bodies and communities to take proactive steps in promoting health and hygiene practices.
