Tragedy struck in Bazabe Quarters of Albasu Local Government Area in Kano State as two men lost their lives after falling into a latrine pit on Saturday, June 21, 2025.

According to a statement by the Kano State Fire Service, the incident occurred around 11:16 a.m., after a distress call was placed to the Takai Fire Station by one Inspector Auwalu. Rescue personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene.

The Fire Service’s Public Relations Officer, Assistant Chief Fire Officer Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, revealed that the first victim, 40-year-old Usman Muhammad, had entered the pit to retrieve his mobile phone—popularly referred to as “Indon Kauye”—which had accidentally fallen into the toilet.

Tragically, Muhammad became trapped inside the pit and was unable to get out. In a desperate rescue attempt, another man, Ibrahim Inuwa, also about 40 years old, descended into the pit to help.

He succeeded in tying a rope around Muhammad in preparation for his extraction, but he too lost consciousness inside the confined space.

“Both men were retrieved from the pit unconscious and were later confirmed dead,” the fire service statement confirmed.

Their bodies were handed over to SP Kabiru Magawata, the Divisional Police Officer of Albasu LGA, for further investigation.

The Kano State Fire Service has since advised members of the public to avoid entering hazardous environments and to always call for professional assistance in emergencies to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
