A dispute over payment of rent turned deadly, resulting in the death of a tenant simply identified as Olayeni in the Oriyangi area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The Oyo State Police Command, in a statement posted on its official X handle on Sunday, confirmed that the incident occurred on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
According to the police, the confrontation began when the landlord invited a friend to help mediate the disagreement over unpaid rent. However, the intervention escalated tensions rather than calming the situation.

“During the altercation, the landlord’s associate allegedly struck the tenant, Olayeni, leading to his collapse. Emergency responders arrived promptly, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the hospital,” the statement read.
The police added that both the landlord and his associate have since been arrested and are undergoing interrogation.
“The suspects have been arrested, and a thorough investigation is underway,” the command assured, while extending condolences to the bereaved family and promising that justice will be served.
