The Council of Arewa Traditional Rulers in Nigeria’s 17 southern states has suspended Alhaji Dahiru Zungeru, the Sarkin Hausawa of Ibadanland, following his attempted dethronement of Alhaji Haruna Maiyasin, the Sarkin Sasa.

Grassroots Parrot reports that the council, led by Maiyasin, announced Zungeru’s indefinite suspension at a press conference in Ibadan, Oyo State, describing Zungeru’s actions as insubordinate and invalid.

Alhaji Suleiman Rabiu, the Sarkin Hausawa of Amuwo Odofin, clarified at the press conference that Zungeru’s team lacked constitutional authority to remove Maiyasin from his position as Sarkin Sasa in Ibadan’s Akinyele Local Government Area.

Consequently, the council’s leadership acted to suspend Zungeru, reaffirming that the attempted removal of Maiyasin was “null and void.”

Speaking on the issue, Maiyasin expressed that Zungeru’s actions were not only an affront to his authority but also a personal attack on his role as chairman of the Council of Arewa Traditional Rulers across the southern states.

He stated that his appointments were validated by credible institutions, which, he asserted, override Zungeru’s authority.

“It is on record that the institution which appointed me as Chairman of Arewa traditional rulers in the 17 southern states and Sarkin Sasa in Akinyele Local Government Area of Ibadan were credible and highly recognized,” Maiyasin remarked.

“If these institutions did not find me wanting in any special regard to warrant my suspension or removal from my offices, it would be beyond the powers of Alhaji Dahiru Ali Zungeru to do so.”

The Council of Arewa Traditional Rulers affirmed its decision to uphold Maiyasin’s role as Sarkin Sasa and council chairman, asserting that any unilateral actions taken by Zungeru were out of bounds and subject to disciplinary review.
