Twelve inmates escaped from the Federal Correctional Centre in Kotonkarfe, Kogi State, during an early morning jailbreak on Monday.

Describing the incident as “unfortunate,” Kogi State Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, assured citizens that the government, in collaboration with security agencies, is taking swift action to prevent a recurrence.

According to Fanwo, law enforcement officers have already re-arrested one of the escapees.

“The claim that the inmates managed to escape through the tower without causing structural damage is highly concerning. A thorough investigation is necessary to uncover the exact circumstances of the escape, track down the fugitives, and identify any potential accomplices within the system,” he stated.

Governor Usman Ododo has directed security agencies to strengthen measures to prevent similar security breaches in the future.

Fanwo urged residents to report any suspicious individuals in their communities, warning that anyone found harboring an escaped inmate would face legal consequences.

“There is no need for panic. We encourage citizens to carry on with their daily activities as usual, knowing that the security of lives and property remains our utmost priority,” he reassured.
