Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has dismissed all 44 local government caretaker chairmen ahead of the upcoming local council elections. The announcement was made during the state’s weekly executive council meeting on Wednesday.
The decision impacts not only the caretaker chairmen but also their deputies, secretaries, and councillors. Governor Yusuf has directed the Directors of Personnel Management (DPMs) in the local councils to assume control until new leadership is elected.
“We are warning the DPMs to make sure they will not interfere in any political activities as respected civil servants,” the governor emphasized, stressing that their role is strictly administrative.

Governor Yusuf expressed gratitude to the outgoing caretaker chairmen for their contributions to the development of their respective local governments, hinting at possible future collaborations with some of them.
The caretaker chairmen, in turn, expressed their thanks for the opportunity to serve their communities.
It has also been reported that some of the caretaker chairmen had resigned prior to the governor’s announcement to pursue elective positions in the upcoming local council polls. The dismissal of the caretaker leadership is seen as a strategic move ahead of the elections.
