The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has secured a two-month jail sentence without the option of a fine for a motorist arrested for driving against traffic on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

Grassroots Parrot reports that FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja by the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide.

He said the conviction was delivered by the Ojodu-Abiodun Magisterial District Court following a special joint intervention patrol launched on Monday to tackle persistent one-way driving along the Kara–Opic axis of the expressway.

Mohammed explained that the illegal practice had worsened due to ongoing bridge expansion joint construction on both directions of the corridor.

Disturbed by the growing recklessness and crash risks, the Lagos Sector Commander, Corps Commander Kehinde Hamzat, initiated the operation in collaboration with the Ogun State Sector Command, corridor officials, the Nigeria Police (Warewa, Ojodu-Abiodun and Isheri divisions), the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), and the Nigerian Army, among others.

During the patrol, officers stationed at known flashpoints apprehended Koko Moses, driver of a Volkswagen bus with registration number MUS 89 YG, for driving against traffic.

Further checks showed he was also driving without a valid licence. He was charged to court by CSP Ayegbede John, DPO of Warewa Police Station, convicted, and sentenced to two months in prison without an option of fine.

The corps marshal said the ruling sends a strong message that traffic violations will no longer be tolerated. He noted that the patrol has already led to a reduction in one-way driving along the corridor and praised the joint team’s coordination.

Mohammed reaffirmed the FRSC’s zero tolerance for offences that endanger lives and urged motorists to obey traffic rules, especially in construction zones, and prioritise safety at all times.
