A female food seller, simply identified as Ammaye, has been lynched by an angry mob in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State over alleged blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad.

The tragic incident occurred on Friday at Kasuwan Garba, sparking fear and tension in the community.

According to eyewitness accounts, the confrontation began in the nearby community of Igwama, where the woman, who was a Muslim and well known in the area as a food vendor, reportedly exchanged words with a young man believed to be her nephew.

The young man was said to have jokingly told her that he wanted to marry her to “fulfil the Sunnah,” a comment that led to a heated exchange. In response, Ammaye allegedly made remarks considered blasphemous by some residents.

Sources said the matter was taken before the District Head of Kasuwan Garba, where the woman was interrogated. Witnesses claimed that during questioning, she repeated her earlier remarks, prompting the District Head to hand her over to security operatives for further investigation.

However, a crowd of agitated youths, dissatisfied with the process, reportedly demanded her immediate execution. Despite efforts by security personnel to shield her, the mob overpowered them, pelting her with stones until she died.

The Chairman of Mariga Local Government Area, Abbas Adamu, confirmed the incident, adding that calm has since been restored to the area after the violent episode.

He assured that authorities are working to prevent a recurrence while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the lynching.
