Taoreed Lagbaja, the chief army staff (COAS), is dead.
This was confirmed in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President, Bayo Onanuga, on Wednesday.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, regrets to announce the passing of Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Chief of the Army Staff, at age 56,” the statement read.
Lagbaja died after battling an undisclosed ailment. He was 56 years of age.
He was appointed COAS by President Bola Tinubu on June 19, 2023.
On October 20, the army dismissed rumors that Lagbaja had passed on, adding that the army chief was undergoing medical treatment abroad.
