The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in Saturday’s local government elections in Rivers State, winning 20 out of the 23 local government areas (LGAs) contested.
The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) announced the results on Sunday in Port Harcourt.
According to the commission, APC’s chairmanship and councillorship candidates—widely regarded as loyalists of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike—dominated the polls across the state.
Some of the LGAs clinched by the APC include:
- Ahoada East – 84,125 votes
- Akuku Toru – 63,593 votes
- Andoni – 126,181 votes
- Asari Toru – 56,383 votes
- Bonny – 13,543 votes
- Degema – 61,536 votes
- Etche – 100,649 votes

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured victory in only two LGAs: Obio/Akpor, with a commanding 328,888 votes, and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni (ONELGA), where it polled 51,051 votes.
The development is already generating political reactions, given that the APC in Rivers State had been sharply divided in the build-up to the elections.
Analysts note that the outcome reflects the growing influence of Wike in the state’s political landscape despite his defection to the APC after serving two terms as governor under the PDP.
RSIEC is expected to present certificates of return to the elected chairmen and councillors in the coming days.
