President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reappointment of retired Brigadier General Mohammed Buba Marwa as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for another five years.

The confirmation was issued on Friday through a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. According to the statement dated November 14, 2025, Marwa’s new tenure will run until 2031.

Marwa, who first assumed office in January 2021 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, has been widely applauded for spearheading sweeping reforms and nationwide anti-drug campaigns that repositioned the NDLEA as a leading law enforcement agency.

Before his appointment to the NDLEA, Marwa chaired the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse (PACECA) between 2018 and 2020. His appointment builds on a distinguished career spanning military command, diplomacy, and public administration.

A graduate of the Nigerian Military School and the Nigerian Defence Academy, Marwa has served as brigade major, aide-de-camp to a former Chief of Army Staff, and defence adviser to Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations. He also holds master’s degrees from Harvard University and the University of Pittsburgh.

Under his leadership, the NDLEA recorded important events, including the arrest of about 73,000 drug traffickers and the seizure of over 15 million kilograms of illicit substances across the country.

The agency also intensified anti-drug abuse advocacy through the “War Against Drug Abuse” (WADA) initiative.

President Tinubu, while commending Marwa’s achievements, urged him to consolidate the gains of the past four years and continue strengthening the nation’s fight against drug abuse and trafficking.
